Consumer mHealth is the practice of medicine and consumer health by using mobile devices along with wireless technologies to create data on the biology, physiology and daily environment of an individual. By using video calling, high-speed data transfer, and other 4G, 3G & LTE networks enabled services, mHealth facilitates the fast delivery of telemedicine services. Mobile health technologies have one-way data application which comprises the flow of information from physician to patients by educative methodology & SMS as well as two-way model that rely on data access programs, such as remote monitoring and client record access.
According to a study by Applied Clinical Trials, the Duke Margolis Center for Health Policy (DMCHP) partnered with the US Food & Drug Administration to release a mHealth action plan called Mobilizing mHealth Innovation for Real-World Evidence Generation. John Reites, Chief Product Officer at THREAD (www.THREADresearch.com), was a contributor to the action plan and elaborated on how this action plan makes a difference in approaching mHealth in clinical research. The FDA focuses in encouraging and supporting digital health initiatives with recent releases of the pre-certification program, Nest and other programs. Robert J. Margolis, MD, Center for Health Policy at Duke University, called for a group of experts from across the mHealth and healthcare ecosystem for the betterment of patient-facing mHealth data. The objective of the action plan is to provide a clear structure as to how mobile health and medical devices can be categorized and defined in the health and research community. The action plan specifically targeted audiences from companies of all sizes and focus areas such as software, medical devices, consumer brands, academia, pharma, etc.
The group DMCHP assembled were experienced, practical, and highly focused and therefore provided a large amount of short-term and long-term recommendations to advance mHealth, most included in the action plan. This action plan is of symbolic significance for the standardization of mHealth in clinical research. For all the research stakeholders, these techniques will be made repeatable, cost effective, and more intuitive.
